Did you know there is still boot camp for juveniles? That’s right, located 2407 N 500 W in LaPorte, IN, there is a facility within the DOC for medium to high-security male juveniles.
If your child has gotten into a little trouble, rest assured they will be in good hands at Camp Summit Boot Camp. Here’s how it works.
About Camp Summit Boot Camp
On average Camp Summit Boot Camp houses 85 juveniles per day. It is a medium to high facility in which juveniles remain in dormitories. Those at this facility learn the value of community, working as a team, and communicating properly.
The program at camp summit boot camp is a 6.5-month duration. While there, juveniles will do military and drill ceremony, physical training, full-time education program, a substance abuse treatment group, and individual and family counseling.
The camp has a comprehensive case management system that consists of an orientation level, 4 growth levels, two transition levels, and a release level.
In order for a male juvenile to graduate from Camp Summit, they will have specific requirements which include, but are not limited to: scheduling of aftercare, 8 hours of community service, and treatment programs.
Individual Growth/Transition/Release Plans are created for each juvenile and updated as needed. Individual Aftercare, Career, and Relapse Prevention Plans must be completed before graduation.
Parents or guardians will also be required to attend one parenting counseling session before the child will be able to graduate from the program.
Visiting at Camp Summit
Because the goal of Camp Summit boot camp is to get these kids to graduation and make them active members of society, visitation is limited. You may only visit Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 pm. Be sure to call (219) 326-1188 beforehand so you can get all the guidelines and directions.
It is Not a Prison
This is not a prison, nor is it really a jail. Think of the Camp Summit Boot Camp as a rehabilitation center. They are trying to get these kids rehabilitated before they turn 18 and end up in jail, or worse, prison. This is a very complex program in which mind, body, and soul is moved and worked in a way that transforms kids into more than the criminal acts they have done.
Keep in mind that even though this is a facility for juveniles, rules and regulations will most likely be the same as jail.
If you have any further questions or concerns, you can always check out the Camp Summit Boot Camp website, or call the facility directly at (21.9) 326-1188.
