The Bartholomew County Jail, located in Columbus, Indiana is a medium to maximum-security facility which is operated by the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s department.
This 80,000-square foot facility houses inmates who are awaiting trial, sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates serve time for less than two years. Bartholomew County accepts inmates from surrounding towns and also those arrested by the Columbus Police Department.
Inmates range from low-level misdemeanor offenders to those being held and awaiting court dates for violent crimes. The security level at Bartholomew County Jail is high. The staff at Bartholomew County Jail is trained to use physical force to protect themselves, visitors, and inmates from violence.
The kitchen staff, with the help of trustees, serves nearly 600 meals daily. All meals are approved by a dietitian. Two full-time maintenance workers and one custodian maintain and clean the Bartholomew County Jail.
Bartholomew County Jail also offers work release programs, house arrest, and private county jails where the convicted person can serve their sentences on weekends. Because overcrowding is a problem at this jail, the jail manages a good behavior program where inmates with good behavior may be released early.
The jail is divided into “pods,” and each pod contains individual cells, common areas, and an outside recreation court.
