Inmates are taken to the intake when they first arrive at the Vermillion County Jail. They are held in a large holding cell where they are under heightened observation. Inmates that cannot control themselves or violent are segregated.
Vermillion County Jail is a medium security detention center for male and female adults that is located in Newport, IN. This facility is managed by the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department and serves the Vermillion County as well as the smaller towns that surround the county. Municipalities, the US Marshal’s Service and the Vermillion Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up are also accepted at the Vermillion County Jail.
Inmates are placed under supervision by a probation agency, released on their own awareness with an agreement to appear in court, released after putting up bail or released to a pretrial services caseload. County Jails do not hold inmates for more than two years. Inmates that are sentenced for more than two years are transferred to a state or federal prison, where they will serve the rest of their sentence.
The Vermillion County Jail offers a Work Release Program for inmates that qualify. This is where the inmate is released to go to work and comes back to the jail after work. There are ruled and policies that the Work Release inmates must adhere to.
