Portland, IN is home to Jay County Jail and holds inmates that are sentenced IN Portland and Jay County Courts and courts of other cities IN the Jay County areas. The Jay County Jail is a medium security facility that is locally managed by the Jay County Sheriff’s Department.
When inmates first arrive at the jail they are taken to the intake where they are held in a large holding cell with other inmates. This is where they are highly monitored. Inmates that are out of control and violent are segregated.
Trustees are inmates that get paid a very small amount for working in the jail as cooks, as orderlies for the staff, in the laundry or in the commissary. Some inmates are able to get a couple of days taken off of their sentence for their work at the jail.
The Jay County Jail offers the Work Release program for their inmates that qualify. There are a number of requirements that an inmate must meet in order to get accepted into this program. Once an inmate is approved they are released to go to work, then they return to the jail at the end of the day when their shift is over.
