The Allen County Jail in Fort Wayne, Indiana is a medium-security jail and is operated locally by the Allen County Sheriff’s Office. Allen County Jail houses inmates who are awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the inmates are here for two years or less.
When an inmate arrives in Allen County Jail, they are put in a large holding cell with other inmates who are also coming into the jail. From there, the jail staff will observe each inmate and decide where to place him or her within the jail.
Allen County Jail has seven security levels for the inmates, ranging from high level one to minimum level 7-9. High level one means that the inmate may not be housed with other inmates, they do not get TV or phone privileges, and their visitation is from legal authorities only. Minimum level 7-9 inmates get extra phone and TV privileges, extra recreational time, are considered for the Trustee program, and are eligible for the work release program.
Trustees are inmates who work in the jail in the kitchen, in the commissary, or as orderlies for the staff of the jail. Trustees are paid a small amount for the work that they do.
