The Harris County Jail is located in Houston, Texas and is the main jail there. This jail is located in the northern part of downtown in the peninsula. The Harris County Jail serves Harris County, Texas, however Joe Kegans State Jail is located in the Harris County Jail as well. The Harris County District Court is right next to the Harris County Jail Complex.
The Harris County Jail is made of three separate jails accompanying with the Joe Kegans State Jail. Here is a list of the jails below:
Joe Kegan's State Jail
The inmates that are behind bars at Joe Kegan's state Jail are normally short term felonies. This jail is the only state jail in the jail complex
701 Jail
The 701 Jail has been open since the late 1920s. This jail is a huge detention facility that can dentain up to 4,156 inmates.
1200 Jail
The 1200 Jail opened their doors in beginning of 2003. The location of the sheriff’s administrative offices are inside of this jail. This facility can detain up to 4,156 inmates in general population, 96 inmates in MHMRA and 124 inmates in the medical devi sion as well.
1307 Jail
The 1307 jail has been open since 1998 and was built to be a part of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice state jail. This jail can detain up to 1,070 inmates.
How to Find Someone in Harris County Jail
The Harris County Jail offers an online record database to the public for anyone that wants to do an inmate search that are in the Harris County Jail. By using an inmate's first and last name, SPN, social security number or by their date of birth, you can do a successful inmate search.
When doing a successful inmate search, you will be able to find the inmate's past and current charges they have, SPN and what prison facility they are currently located in.

Sending a Mail/Care Package
All mail that is arriving to the Harris County Jail must have the following information:
- Inmates Full Name
- SPAN
- Inmates Housing Unit
- Cell Block Location
- Sender’s Full Name
- Sender's Address
Any arriving mail that does not have all the information listed below, will be sent back to sender.
The jail staff checks all mail that comes into the facility. All mail will be sent back to sender immediately if they are sprayed with perfume, makeup, lipstick, or anything else.
Inmates are allowed to receive four magazines and two paperback books at a time. Used and hardback books are not permitted. Books have to be sent straight from the publisher and they must be new as well.

Sending Money
There are several different ways money can be sent to inmates in Harris County Jail.
Kiosk
There are kiosks in the lobbies at the 1200 Jail and the 701 Jail. In order to deposit funds into an inmate's account you will need to know the inmates SPN as well as their full name to use this service.
Online
Using the Touchpad website you can make deposits into an inmate's account. The deposit is immediately posted when funding an inmate's account this way. However, this service does have a fee.
By calling Touchpad at 1-866-232-1899 deposits can be made. This service accepts credit and debit card payments. You will also need the inmate's full name and their SPN. You can deposit just up to $100 by phone, however there is no fee assosiated with this service.
Western Union
You can also use Western Union to deposit funds. You call them at 1-800-643-3422, log onto their website or use one of their kiosks as well. $300 is the maximum deposit you can make by either phone or online. There is a service fee involved with this service as well.
You will need to know the following information:
- Inmates Full Name
- Inmate's SPN
- Code city, which is ITF-Texas.
Ace Cash Express
You can deposit money using Ace Cash Express by going into one of their 1485 stores. This service only accepts cash, no credit or debit card payments allowed. The maximum amount you can send is $1,000. There is also a fee for this service.
Money orders and cashier’s checks can be sent to the Jail. Checks need to be payable to the “Inmate Trust Fund” as well as SPN and their name on the bottom. The jail will send the check back to sender if the check is not made payable to "Inmate Trust Fund". Money orders and cashier checks can be sent to the following address:

Phone calls
Inmates at the Harris County Jail are not allowed to receive phone calls from family and friends. Although they can make collect calls to family and friends that posses a land line. Inmates are not able to make a collect call to any cell phones. The individual receiving the collect call is responsible for any and all fees associated with the collect calls. The only calls inmates at the Harris County Jail can make are collect calls
Any calling features such as three-way calls and call forwarding are prohibited. If you are found using these features, the call will be disconnected immediately. All calls are monitored and recorded.
Harris County Jail inmates do not have access the internet. Through JPay friends and family can send messages and emails to an inmate.
If family and friends want to keep in touch with an inmate they can do so through JPay. However, there are fees assosiated with JPay.
Commissary
The Harris County Jail has a commissary which is also known as the cantine. The inmates can purchase a variety of day to day life items from the commissary.
The schedule is different for each cell block for commissary delivery . Inmates can buy up to $150 worth at the commissary at a time.

At the Harris County Jail visitation is a privilege. Without any warning, a visitation can be provoked. Before visitors are allowed in the visitation area they must have their government ID on them.
Inmates are permitted 2 adults and 2 children visitors during visiting hours at a time. Children must be accompanied by their legal gardian. Visitors must follow the jail's dress code rules.
