The New Orleans Jail is a minimum-security detention center for adults that opened in the year of 1984.
Those who are arrested within the city limits are taken to the New Orleans Jail where they are processed at the intake. This is where the offenders are fingerprinted and booked. Offenders are housed in single-person cells and are provided with three meals a day.
The New Orleans Jail is a short term facility so the offenders are transported to the county jail if they are denied bail. However, a majority of the arrestees within this facility are eligible for bail.
The prison is operated and maintained by Louisiana Department of Corrections (DOC)

Visiting Rules
Visitation days at the New Orleans Jail are on the even and odd system by the inmate’s last number of his Doc number in conjunction with the date. Odd number doc numbers have visitations on odd number days even numbers on even number days. There are no visits on the 31st of every month.
Visitors must be registered at least one hour before the last hour of visitation. You will also be required to present your government-issued photo ID card. All minors under the age of 18 must be an immediate family member to the inmate and be accompanied by a legal guardian that is also on the inmate’s approved visitors list.
During your visitation at the New Orleans Jail, you or the offender is not allowed to use the restroom. If someone needs to use the restroom the visit will be over. Not including infants and toddlers, 3 visitors are allowed to visit at a time. Offenders are allowed to have two visits each week.
