The Sullivan County Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 24 South State Street in Sullivan, Indiana. Opened since 1984, this county jail is operated locally by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and houses inmates who are awaiting court dates or serving sentences under two years. Sullivan County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal’s Service and the Sullivan Police Department who do not have their own jail.
Sullivan County Jail has a daily average of 73 inmates, both male and female, and 18 full-time employees.
Inmate offenses range from low-level misdemeanors to high-level felonies. Inmates who are violent or out of control are segregated.
The jail is divided into sections, and each section has individual cells, common areas, and a recreation court. Inmates are allowed one hour of recreation time each day. There are typically two to three inmates who share a cell.
Inmates are served three meals a day—all meals are approved by a dietician. The kitchen staff, with the help of the jail trustees, prepare and serve the mails. Trustees are inmates who work around the jail—in the kitchen, the laundry room, or the commissary. They receive a small amount of money for their work and some get their sentence reduced.
