The Huntington County Jail was constructed in the year of 1984 at a cost of $2.2 million dollars. This facility was designed to hold 99 inmates, however, it averages 100-105 inmates throughout the year. A second floor was added that consists of office space and a large meeting room, in 1998.
There are 14 full time and 10 part time Jailers at the Huntington County Jail. There is a one week Jailer’s School accredited by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy that all full-time Jail Officers are required to complete. The Jailers are in charge of inmate care, discipline, and booking.
There is a fully operational kitchen where all meals are prepared for the inmates at the Huntington County Jail. Cooks prepare meals with the help of jail trustees.
Trustees are inmates that get paid a small amount of money for their work at the jail.
The chief law enforcement officer in Huntington County is Sheriff Terry Stoffel. The Sheriff, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the entire department is overseen by the Chief Deputy Chris Newton that works directly under the Sheriff.
