The Tipton County Jail is managed by the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department and servers the Tipton County as well as the surrounding area. Municipalities, the US Marshal’s Service and the Tipton Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up are also taken to the Tipton County Jail.
Inmates are taken to a large holding cell with other inmates when they first arrive at the jail in the intake. This is where the inmates are watched very closely. Inmates that are crazy, out of control and violent are segregated.
The Tipton County Jail is a 120-year-old building that is located in Tipton, IN. This facility is limited to a 27-bed capacity.
The new Tipton County Jail will compete in October of 2019 with over 35,000 square feet. The new, 80-bed facility will be stacked. This will be a two-level operational concept, divided up into four areas:
- Inmate housing
- Support and intake/booking and release
- Public area
- Sheriff’s office
There will a high degree of visibility with direct observation of intake and booking from the control room.
The indoor and outdoor recreation area will be under the roof and jail detainees will never be outside of the walls of the buildings or see out of the building.
