Putnam County Jail

Located in Greencastle, Indiana, you will find the Putnam County Jail. The Putnam County Jail can house just around 145 adult men and adult women. The Putnam County Jail will be responsible for three different categories of inmates. These categories are as follows:

  • County inmates that have already been serving out their sentence (12 months or less)
  • County inmates waiting for their trial to begin
  • Inmates who came from the Indiana Department of Corrections (typically when state prisons are overcrowded)

Let’s take a small trip down memory lane. The Putnam County Jail has a history that dates back to 1836. This is when the original Putnam County Jail was around. This all started when Hudson Brackney, Wesley White, and Issac Mahan were in charge of building a new facility. This jail facility would not be completely finished until 4 years later in 1840. This original Putnam County Jail was in use until the early 1930s.

It was then a few facilities were to be constructed under the supervision of the former superintendent of the Alcatraz Prison. However, this facility would not open its doors until 1939. This facility had many similarities to Alcatraz. One main similarity was its locking mechanisms. This facility would be in use until the very early 1990s. This is when Sheriff Gerry Hoffa was reporting that the Putnam County Jail was experiencing many problems with overcrowding, and the Putnam County was in dire need of a bigger facility.

The Putnam County Jail that you see today cost the county nearly $5.6 millions and finished construction in December of 1995.

Throughout all of this, the Putnam County Jail was always under the management and operation of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. The current Sheriff of Putnam County is Scott Stockton.

While inmates are serving out their sentences in the Putnam County Jail, they will have a number of programs that they can take advantage of. These programs are here to help inmates gain skills, education, and coping mechanisms that will help them when they are released from the facility. These programs include a GED Prep, Moral Reconation Therapy, religious programs, mental health, and a few others.

As previously mentioned the Putnam County Jail works very closely with the Indiana Department of Corrections. The Putnam County Jail regularly will take inmates from the Indiana Department of Corrections due to the agencies problem with overcrowding. On any given day the Putnam County Jail will typically have around 80 inmates from the Indiana Department of Corrections. However, the Indiana Department of Corrections will pay the Putnam County Jail around $35 every day for every inmate they house of theirs.
