The first original Kosciusko County Jail was constructed in 1837. The original Kosciusko County Jail was constructed with 14-inch square logs. The original Kosciusko County Jail was a two-story facility that had a trap door located from the second floor, so it can access the first floor.

The next Kosciusko County Jail was constructed out of brick.  Just like the first jail, it was nestled near the Courthouse Square.

It was not until 1869, the second facility needed major repairs. There were many jail escapes during this time. This is when the county officially decided they needed to hire George Garnsey of Chicago to help them design their next new facility. However, one of the more notable jail escapes was when inmates were pushing bricks right out of the wall.

For the longest time, the Kosciusko County Jail had a “Castellated Gothic” feel. This was forever popular in the late 1800s when it came to the American jail designs. They had rough, massive stone blocks that gave off the feeling of permanence and strength. The Kosciusko County Jail had narrow windows. The entrance to the second story implied that it had a very restrictive function. In order to stop future jail escapes, they had to pierce iron dowel rods in the stone blocks. This helped prevent the stones from being pushed out.

The second story of the Kosciusko County Jail consisted of the sheriff’s residence. The sheriff of the Kosciusko County was always on duty and had to be the live-in warden for the Kosciusko County Jail.
