Reception Male Diagnostic Center

Because jails, prisons, and reception diagnostic centers are not all the same, it can be tricky to navigate your way through it. Every facility has it’s own set of rules, procedures, and ways of doing things. The Reception Male Diagnostic center is kind of like a county jail, but works a little differently. Here is what you need to know:

About the Facility

The Reception Male Diagnostic Center is an intake facility. The facility is located at 737 Moon Road in Plainfield, IN It was established in 1971 and holds an average of 434 offenders per day. Each offender is confined to a cell.

While in this facility, the offenders are watched and tested. This facility is a holding cell until an offender can be transferred to the Indiana State Prison. The RDC is a maximum security intake facility for adult males that have been sentenced to the Indiana Department of Correction.

Every offender who is received at this facility is classified and transferred to a long term facility. However, offenders who are sentenced to the death penalty will bypass this facility and go straight to death row at Indiana State Prison.

Juvenile offenders who are sentenced in Indiana and treated as adults will be incarcerated at Pendleton Juvenile facility until they reach the age of 18. At this point, they will be transferred to an adult prison.

What They Do

This facility merely does interviews, reports, and diagnostic tests on offenders. These evaluations include the following:

  • Complete medical examination
  • Dental examination
  • Psychological interview
  • Lab work, including taking DNA samples and blood draws (to test for certain communicable diseases)
  • TB testing
  • Education testing (TABE – Test of Adult Basic Education) is also administered to offenders.

Sending Mail, Visiting, and Phone Calls

Because the Reception Male Diagnostic Center is only an intake facility, offenders will not be allowed to have visits, phone calls, or offered programs. Again, this is only a holding cell until offenders can be transferred to their permanent location. However, visits from attorneys are permitted.

You may send mail to an inmate at this location, but all letters must be on white paper and written in blue or black ink. There are no exception. Mail will need to be addressed to the offender, with his DOC number included, and sent to 737 Moon Road in Plainfield, IN. You can find the DOC number by doing an inmate search.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can call the facility directly at (317) 839-7727.
