The Decatur County Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 119 East Railroad Street in Greensburg, Indiana. Operated locally by the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, the Decatur County Jail houses inmates who are awaiting their court sentencing. The majority of the sentenced inmates serve less than two years at the jail.
The Decatur County Jail originally opened in 1978 and was renovated in 2000. The current inmate population on an average day is 59, and there are 27 full-time employees.
There are new inmates who are delivered to the jail daily. Some are able to pay their bail and are released; others are placed under supervision by a probation agency and are released. If there is no release, the inmate must wait in jail until his or her court sentencing. While in Decatur County Jail, the inmate is guaranteed a bed and three meals daily. All meals are approved by a dietician.
The jail is divided into “pods,” each of which includes inmate cells, common areas, and an outside recreation court where the inmates can play basketball. Inmates are allowed one hour of recreation time daily. Common area tables are made of solid steel with attached four seats. Each inmate cell holds 2-3 inmates.
